The Northside Chamber of Commerce's origin dates back to 1897. But one of its most momentous milestones happened far more recently: in 2021. That's when it launched NorthSideWorks! - a partner for Northside residents to find the resources they need to gain employment, and area businesses to fill job vacancies. One Northside, an initiative of the Buhl Foundation, provided critical funding to launch the effort.
Carrie Nolan-Robson, Executive Director of the Northside Chamber of Commerce, said the organization's unprecedented level of engagement with Northside businesses is a key element that's made NorthSideWorks! successful.
"Taking a variety of resources in education, government, workforce, and finance and bundling it into an initiative, as a way to meet the everyday challenge for job-seekers and employers, is what NorthsideWorks! seeks to alleviate, leading to success," Nolan-Robson said.
Employment at the forefront.
Quinn Kirby, Northside/North Shore Chamber of Commerce Manager of Strategic Initiatives, stresses that NorthSideWorks! offers more than just access to job opportunities. The initiative's resources also provide information on training and skills building from various community organizations and chamber members in and around the Northside.
"We're really focusing on the good work that everyone is doing and making sure that residents know about it," said Kirby."That's our main focus."

Getting the word out.
Kirby is quick to add that NorthSideWorks! is not an employment agency. Rather it's a communication hub for the Northside Chamber of Commerce's more than 400 members to post jobs, training and other resources that are relevant to Northside residents.
"We aren't working directly with job seekers," they said. "We're sending this information to them, and then they have to self-identify with the employer or other resources that they found through Northside Works."
As such, communication is critical to this effort. Kirby said NorthSideWorks! shares timely information once a month in two newsletters. One, “Career Connect,” is for job seekers. The other, “Employer Update,” is just that – updates for employers. These provide upcoming skill building and career events for job seekers as well as recruiting and retention opportunities for employers.

Vision for the near-future.
Both Nolan-Robson and Kirby realize the importance of connecting Northsiders with the resources to help them find jobs. Still, their vision for NorthSideWorks! is to provide opportunities that better fit residents' skills and lead to sustainable, long-term occupations.
"We're here to build careers more than jobs," Nolan Robson said. "There's nothing wrong with having a job. But we want to start building those life-sustaining careers."
Additional resources may be found on the NorthSideWorks! landing page. There, visitors will be met with resources for residents, employers, service organizations and training providers.

We are the overarching bridge between employers and residents located within the 18 Northside communities. Our Chamber’s membership is comprised of nearly 70% of businesses located within our footprint. It only made sense to develop this workforce initiative known as NorthsideWorks! to provide an additional value to the community we serve.
