Trash and Recycling on Northside

The City of Pittsburgh is aiming to become a zero-waste city by 2030. To reach this goal, residents are encouraged to follow the city's trash and receycling collection rules.

When waste is not properly managed, it can contaminate drinking water, release toxic emissions, release harmful greenhouse gases, and harm wildlife. To avoid potential fines, follow these simple rules.

Trash and Recylcling Collection Rules

1.     Set out bins for collection after 6 pm the night before collection and before 6 am the day of collection.

2.     Remove bin from curb by 10 pm the day of collection

3.     Place waste containers less than 5 feet from the curb and do not block the road, sidewalks, or driveways.

4.     Yard waste is collected 2 times a year

5.     Recyclables are collected from blue containers every other week

6.     What can be recycled:

So, what can you do?

1.     Reduce consumption. The best way to eliminate waste is by reducing the amount you use. When possible, choose to purchase less and attempt to make items last for a long period of time.

2.     Reuse items. When possible, try to reuse items instead of buying new. For example, thrifting used clothes, using hand me downs, and borrowing something you will only use once, are all ways to help the planet while also saving money.

3.     Recycle. Take a look at the above guidelines to understand what can and cannot be recycled.
