Together for a safer Northside: residents and police united.
The safety of the Northside is a responsibility that we all share. Zone 1 Cares is a collaborative effort between the residents of the Northside and Zone 1 police officers that works to build trust and prevent crime across the 18 neighborhoods of our community.
At the center of Northside safety.
The Calvin M. Hall Public Safety Center in Northview Heights anchors this effort. Named for a fallen Pittsburgh police officer, it's a place where residents and officers come together to develop a community-based policing approach built upon understanding and empathy.

Everyone here has a life just like I do. They just want to go about their day and not have anybody inconvenience them. So, I relate to a lot of that stuff. We share it in common. And that just makes it easier to communicate.

Frequently asked questions
The Zone 1 Police Station is located at 1501 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15212. For non-emergency matters, you can call the station directly at 412-323-7201. For general city services or to report non-urgent concerns, dial 3-1-1.
A non-emergency is any situation that does not involve an immediate threat to life, property, or public safety. Examples include noise complaints, vandalism or theft that has already occurred, parking issues, minor car accidents without injuries, and suspicious activity that is not currently happening. In these cases, residents should call the Pittsburgh Police non-emergency number at 412-323-7800 or dial 311 for general city service concerns. For emergencies requiring immediate response, always call 911.
Zone 1 actively collaborates with community initiatives to enhance safety and foster relationships between police and residents. One such program is "Zone 1 Cares," which focuses on building trust and preventing crime across the Northside's 18 neighborhoods. The Calvin M. Hall Public Safety Center in Northview Heights serves as a hub for community policing efforts. Additionally, the "Pittsburgh Police Cares" initiative, which began in Zone 1, aims to connect officers with community members through events and open communication channels.
Residents are encouraged to participate in Public Safety Zone Councils, which are open forums for discussing community safety concerns and initiatives. On the Northside, residents can attend the North Side Public Safety Council that meets on the 1st Thursday of every month. These councils work in tandem with the city's "Safer Together" program, aiming to strengthen partnerships between the police and the communities they serve. For more information or to get involved, you can contact President, Yvonne Rainey at zone1psc@gmail.com or Jess Farrell, the Safer Together Coordinator for Zone 1, at jessica.farrell@pittsburghpa.gov.
If you notice something unusual—like unfamiliar people loitering, possible drug activity, or suspicious vehicles, you can report it by calling the Pittsburgh Police non-emergency line at 412-323-7800. If the situation poses an immediate threat or appears to be a crime in progress, call 911. Providing as much detail as possible (time, location, description, etc.) helps officers respond effectively.
Residents can view crime maps and reports by visiting the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Public Safety Portal. Zone 1 covers all Northside neighborhoods, and data can be filtered by date, type of crime, and neighborhood. Some neighborhoods also share public safety updates during community meetings or through local newsletters.
There are several ways to engage:
- Join or start a block watch in your neighborhood.
- Attend Zone 1 Public Safety Council meetings on the 1st Thursday of every month.
- Participate in “Safer Together” events or other programs hosted by the city’s Office of Community Services and Violence Prevention.
- Contact Jess Farrell, Zone 1’s Safer Together Coordinator, at jessica.farrell@pittsburghpa.gov to learn about volunteer opportunities or neighborhood initiative
